Target audience: rough cut feedback

Feedback:

After listening and discovering feedback from a 17 year old boy that would fit into my target audience category I have learnt a number of things and become more understanding of how to improve the music video, in order to make it more suitable for members of my audience.

Khaleem begun by saying that he thought it would be good to include some form of vehicle such as a car or motorbike at the beginning where motorbike sound effects can be heard. In order to improve the music video, I will therefore aim to include videos of a car, or cars, to link to the music video convention of linking the music to the visuals seen on screen. This connection should make the video much easier to watch, allowing it to flow, and creating an understanding of the meaning behind the lyrics.

As a result to a member of my target audience noticing the lack of studio shots, I aim to take more professional shots within a studio room, with professional lighting focusing on specific members of the band. Doing this should further represent the individuality between the band members as well as representing the stars and allowing them to become recognisable and remembered by the audience. Not only will studio shots aim to support the creation of star iconography per band member, but it will also allow the video to appear more professional and interesting as a result to the coloured lights that could be used.

He also mentioned lip syncing shots, and shots being too long. In order to improve the music video I will therefore cut these shots, and ensure on beat editing so that the visuals fit in time with the music and pace of the song. Doing this will create a more up beat music video, creating a sense of positivity amongst the audience, as well as making the video easy to watch.

Receiving target audience feedback means I will be able to alter the video specifically to those that it is targeted for, making it more suitable for my target audience on a whole.

Rough cut one:

Rough cut one:

Here is an incomplete version of our music video, I showed it to a few people and asked for feedback in order to allow me to understand what I should do within future filming and editing in order to improve the music video overall. From watching the music video myself, as well as also showing my music video to members of my target audience I have realised that some studies shots, using a variety of different lights would be useful to create emotion amongst the audience, allowing them to feel attached to the members. At the beginning of the music video there is the sound of a motorbike or vehicles, at this point I think we should include panning shots of vehicles or busy roads to create a link between whats seen on screen and the lyrics of the song. Throughout the music video, myself and Rediola have been able to use on beat editing, to increase the pace of the video, allowing it to feel upbeat and creating a positive or joyful atmosphere.

Throughout the video we have tried to maintain similar lighting depending on location and we have managed to keep the lighting consistent, usually being quite dark so that bright lights and colours can be used to create focus upon specific members. I also think that our varied locations attract the audience making it more interesting and keeping the viewers intrigued.

In order to improve the music video, I think that we should use more on beat editing during the chorus of the song, this will increase the excitement created from the video, as well as create a stronger connection between the lyrics, music heard as well as video seen. There are few parts of the music video where the lip-syncing either doesn't fit, or doesn't seem realistic as a result to the way the individual sang it, in order to fix this I am therefore going to re-do some scenes in a studio using different lights to improve the way that the music video flows.

I have also noticed that within the dancing shots Ashleigh is wearing a top that is slightly too dark, causing her not to look the same as the other dancers, although I am unable to fix those specific shots, when filming studio shots I will ensure each of the individuals are wearing bright t-shirts so they are able to stand out and seem noticeable.

Evidence of filming:

Evidence of filming:

Here we aimed to film all studio shots, including much more lip synching to what we already had, as some of our previous lip synching wasnt to a high enough standard. We used many different colours of the studio lights in order to create moods, and further express positivity. If I was to go back to filming this day, I would ensure to have kept a schedule, as we took printwork images, however, they were not to a high enough standard, and were therefore retaken at a later date.

Evidence of creating a record label: Photoshop

Evidence of creating a record label:

Firstly, after determining the name of my record label I created a text box and wrote 'global' and then changed the font and adjusted the kurning (distance between letters) of the typography. I then saved an image of a world from google, and inserted it into photoshop.

Next, I used the text box to write music underneath 'global' and used the line tool to draw two lines either side of the world. Finally I altered the font of the word 'music' to the same font as the one I used previously.

Record logo:

Record logo:

This is my record label. In order to follow the typical conventions of a record label I kept the logo simple. I called it Global in order to suggest that the record label for the music video is colossal and known across the world. This links the world used as an 'O' into the idea that the company is well known worldwide. Similar to other record label logos I only used black and white, doing this will make it easily memorable and therefore make it recognisable to the audience.

Evidence of editing:

Evidence of editing: Final cut

Here is some evidence that me and Rediola have been putting together and editing our music video.

These are a section of our footage for Ashleigh's independent shots, Rediola and myself scrolled through all of the videos, watching them over and choosing the most appropriate, clearest, and the highest quality of them all. We would them bring them down into music video and cutting it accurately.

After downloading the music I inserted it into final cut and clicked M on the key board in order to add a little blue tab along the music. I did this whenever I heard a strong beat, or an area that I would want to cut a piece of footage at on order to ensure editing is on beat.

After putting most of the footage together and cutting it so that the music video is on beat to the music we added filters or effects to make the footage more interesting. I think that this bad television effect suits the graffiti skatepark as it creates an unrealistic approach and makes it seem more detailed. I also think that the fact the effect blurs the wall is beneficial and provides depth.

At this point we are cutting footage of Hannah to ensure that it fits within the blue pages we have created making sure it is on beat to the music.

The beginning shots of the girls were all filmed in different locations in order to represent a sense of individuality, however, doing this meant that each of the scenes have slightly different lighting. in order to fix this we chose the colour corrector effect and then altered colour, saturation and exposure of the shots on the colour board in order to adjust them all and make them all similar.

Font testing for digipak or poster:

Experimental digipak or poster fonts:

Power - Simple Arial font, this would work well as typically digipaks consist of very simple typography to keep the focus of the audience on the songs the CD consists of and also creating individuality for the artist who produces the music through the image present.

Power: Still kept simple, but slightly more delicate representing the girls as feminine, this may not be appropriate for my digipak as through the music video we are trying to present the girls as powerful and dominant. It may however suit the natural and simple style the girls hold through costume and make-up in the video.

Power:  This is bold and will therefore quickly grab the attention of the audience allowing the artists to become recognisable.

Power: The hand written effect of the lobster font links to the realistic and down to earth persona provided by the band as they show their individuality through simple everyday clothes. However, this font is relatively intricate possibly taking the attention away from the images of the girls that will be on the front cover of the digipak or poster.

Power: Simplicity maintained, keeping focus upon images or information presented.

Power: Detailed typography could either remove focus from the girls or highlight the detailed personalities that are presented, as each female member of the band is suggested to have their own individual personality.

Power: This is similar to that used on the real Little Mix digipak and could be used to represent a slight childish aspect to the band, allowing the younger generation to associate themselves more, therefore creating a larger target audience. A childish aspect represents their fun and joyful attitude.

pOWER: I like this one as it is relatively simple, however not basic, it represents meaning of the females being fun and positive throughout the upbeat song and suits the title of power well as it is feisty, however, the handwriting effect still allows it to apply to the natural and real persona the girls have created through their costumes. Their down to earth persona is unlike the way artists usually present themselves allowing the group of girls to stand out in myself and Rediola's music video. This would also attract a larger audience as individuals would feel respected.

Power/ power: This font is bold and noticeable allowing it to stand out, however it may take attention away from any images present.

Power/ Power : Could appear like a hand written piece allowing it to link to the way the girls are presented.

Power: I like this one as it is bold, and therefore will attract the attention of the audience, however, unlike the other bold fonts it consists of a slight natural handwritten effect, allowing it to link to the visuals within the music video or images on the digipak/poster.

How and why did I choose my track?

How and why did I choose my track?

There are a few reasons as to why Rediola and myslef thought that 'Power' by Little Mix was a suitable song to create a music video for...
  • Strong beat for on beat editing
  • Fat paced, providing us with a lot of opprtunities for a variety of shots ext
  • Able to highlight independence of women
  • Show a message
  • Show individuality and create a group

Music Video Analysis:

Music Video Analysis:

Music videos can be used to express emotion and signal to the audience what the singer/songwriter is like, and allow the artist to present themselves how they wish to be remembered in order to ensure they are recognisable and noticed amongst other members of the music industry.

Bebe Rexha in her music video 'Meant to Be' uses her setting, costume props and make-up, as well as a narrative and various camera angles in order to make both the music video and herself known. Throughout most of the music video Bebe Rexha sticks to a relatively simple location to ensure the main focus of the audience is on her. She chooses a Wild West dry atmosphere, with dull browns and greys so that the bright red of her shirt is able to stand out. The blue sky within the setting may also be used to suggest positivity, creating an optimistic set of emotions amongst the audience.

Her choice of costume also throughout the video acts to ensure she is centre of attention. The bright red of her shirt at the beginning, as well as the red of her dress further on through the video and her bold lipstick allows her to present herself as a bold and outgoing character, possibly one that is confident. The shirt at the beginning, not only suggests her confidence but also allows the audience to understand that she is a laid back individual, and easy to get along with, ensuring that Bebe Rexha is seen to be down to earth and kind, further causing the audience to begin to like her as a new and upcoming singer. Under the shirt she is also wearing a tight corset that shows her chest. This once again is suggestive of confidence within herself, as well as also presenting a voyeuristic style to the music video, attracting male members of the audience. Bebe Rexha also has short, white or platinum hair, this being bold and outgoing represents her confident characteristics. Although she shows confidence Bebe Rexha maintains simple make-up throughout. Doing so, allows her to seem down to earth, and just like members of the audience, ensuring the audience are able to connect with her, rather than feel intimidated.

She also uses close ups, or medium long shots of herself throughout most of the video, not only does this allow the audience to understand the type of individual she is, but also to allow herself to become recognised within the music industry as she starts of her music career. Close-ups also portray emotion, allowing the audience to possibly sympathise with her as she sings about being hurt in the past, and learn more about her specific characteristics.

A prop that Bebe Rexha uses is a bright yellow car, once again this is used to allow her to stand out and become noticed, ensuring that she is the centre of attention throughout the duration of the music video.

The music video also indicates a narrative aspect linking the shots seen with the lyrics, the end of the video shows a small backtrack of the beginning and middle of the video, before a sudden 'ting' and Bebe Rexha sits up. Doing this is suggestive that what the audience had seen was a dream, allowing the audience to understand a bit about Bebe's dream, and her possible feelings or emotions towards a particular man.

Overall the music video is effective at allowing Bebe Rexha to become noticed and easily recognisable as well as present her character to the audience. The music video presents narrative conventions, allowing viewers to sympathise with the artist, as well as joyful singing shots to create a positive atmosphere.
